Medic, Coren join the Premier League III
By Sean Lind
Sooner than expected, the third edition of the PartyPoker Premier League is nearing its start, with two new big poker names confirmed for the cast.
Canadian Nenad Medic is quickly becoming one of the world's most respected poker players, largely thanks to his exceptional tournament record: a 2008 WSOP bracelet for the $10,000 Pot-Limit Hold'em Championship event, a first-place finish at the 2006 Foxwoods WPT Poker Final worth over $1.7 million, and various circuit cashes including his latest fourth place at the 2008 WPT Festa al Lago.
"Nenad Medic is a 'real' player," says Mike Sexton. "He has won on the World Poker Tour and at the WSOP and all top players respect him. When it comes to players who excel in both cash games and tournaments, Nenad Medic is one of the best in the world."
Medic is excited to take part in the event, especially since becoming acquainted with all of the players involved, including Annette Obrestad, Roland De Wolfe, Andy Black, Juha Helppi, J.C. Tran and the most recent addition, Victoria Coren.
Victoria Coren is on record as the first woman to win an EPT event, winning the EPT London in 2006. She has taken part in both of the previous Premier League events, final-tabling the first and narrowly missing a repeat performance in the second.
"I'm really pleased my friend Annette is in the new line-up, because I'm a huge fan of hers for many reasons," Coren said. "On the other hand, she's the only one I fear.
"The rest of them are darling little poppets but - like all men - they can't take pain, they can't keep secrets, they can't hide their feelings. They are emotional, stubborn, impatient and hamstrung by pride. When they put shelves up, they hammer their thumbs, wail, shriek and pretend to be fine when they're obviously not. Translate that to the poker table: this is Christmas."
It's safe to say the gauntlet has been thrown down. The players involved will take part in a unique league format. All 12 players will play six times in the preliminary stages. The leading four players will then progress to the final table with the next four battling it out in heads-up matches for the final two seats.
The buy-in to the Premier League III has been raised to a substantial $75,000, with Party Poker adding an additional $350,000 to the prize pool, for an impressive total of $1.25 million. The event is scheduled to take place this month in London from the 24th to the 30th.
